This 1955 Cape Cod variation had tiny Bedrooms and an even smaller shared Bath, with unsafely steep stairs to get there. Due to the side driveway to the attached garage, we were only able to add 20" on to the side enough - just enough to reconstruct the stairs to meet code and provide easier access to the second floor and basement.
The first floor remained primarily the same, with new doors to the Home Office / Playroom and slightly redesigned Bath. The small addition increased the Kitchen area, with a future furniture piece island and a lovely corner built-in cabinet.
A completely new second floor, with cantilevered dormer addition on the back of the house maintained the character of the front of the house while adding desperately need square footage to the second floor. The side dormer allowed for a laundry room on the second floor, as well as 3 full Bedrooms, a Hall Bath and a new Owners' Suite with en suite Bath. The Owner's Bath includes a lovely sweeping barrel ceiling, and a custom shower with river rock and actual fossil as tile for the surround.
Custom built-ins are everywhere in this house, maximizing the small footprint and decreasing the need for additional furniture pieces. The Owners and their small children wanted a colorful and inviting home, and carried colors throughout the home, in Beds, Baths, and the tri-colored Kitchen Cabinets.
